The characters in this third collection of short fiction from Sparks ( The Unfinished World and Other Stories, 2016, etc.) exemplify the famous quote from Muriel Rukeyser that made the social media rounds in the wake of the #MeToo movement: “What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? / The world would split open.” These are stories of that split-open world. Bite-sized fiction about the lives of women, from the far past to the present and beyond, who have been wronged. ![]()

It’s not novelty that draws me to a memoir, at least not always. High stakes make for great reading, but examine any life, and you’ll see the stakes get pretty high for all of us at some point, even if the only decisions we ever make are the ones billions of people have made before us and billions will make again. But I also want to read about the lives (and deaths) of people who face nothing extraordinary at all, whose stories exemplify the challenges and realities of common, daily existence. The series builds on itself in some lovely ways, while also providing a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at life for musicians on the road. And truly the ending of this book left me with such a good book feeling that it erased all the negative ones I had during the first 50% of the book where I struggled to become engaged. This is a tough book because it’s a fairly slow moving story and much of it is focused on the heroine’s struggle with her current position in life, but there is a romance in it and the ending of the story is very romantic.Ī friend of mine said that the first chapter is to hook the reader on the present book and the last chapter is to get the reader to buy the next book (not necessarily in the series but just any book by the author). Yang hints at a romance between Vibiana and Bao, whose stories repeatedly intersect. He joins up with the Big Sword Society, a group of fighters trying to protect Chinese villages from “foreign devils.” Vibiana, his counterpart at the center of “Saints,” is a peasant girl who, converted to Christianity by missionaries, dreams of being a maiden warrior like Joan of Arc. Little Bao, the protagonist of “Boxers,” is a peasant boy with a head full of the gods and heroes of Chinese opera. Set at the end of the 19th century, against the backdrop of China’s Boxer Rebellion, they’re historical fantasies that gradually curdle into historical tragedies, with a cruelly averted love story at their center. “Boxers” and “Saints,” his two new, intimately connected graphic novels, are even more ambitious - and far grimmer. Gene Luen Yang’s breakthrough graphic novel, “American Born Chinese,” was hugely ambitious: a modern coming-of-age story filtered through the transformational powers of mythology and caricature. ![]() ![]() ![]() While the stories that these great authors have written are immortal in their own right, the lives of these writers themselves are often so much stranger than fiction, and these stories are just as worthy of adaptation as the fiction they created. ![]() Modern writers draw inspiration from a legion of storytellers that came before, sometimes adapting their works, characters, and settings into beautiful modern retellings, and sometimes utilizing storytelling techniques and conventions that were first seen within the pages of their works.
